Why do the newborn clothes I bought not fit my 7.5 lb newborn? They swamp her.?
Ok, I had my 7lb 8oz , 20 inch long baby girl. She is exactly what statistics say the average baby weighs in the US, yet baby gap, gymboree, kohls, and even Potterybarn kids baby wear swamp her in the newborn size. I am so disappointed. A beautiful new baby and nothing to dress her up in. Do I now have to go out and buy preemie size clothes? Is there some size I missed that is smaller than newborn?

my son was 7lbs 9oz and 20inches long(almost the same size…lol) and i had the same exact problem. i bought like 4 or 5 premie outfits and put them on him when we were goin out somewhere and when i was home i let him wear the clothes that were to big. dont worry they grow very quickly.CONGRATULATIONS
It’s always like that, babies grow so fast and in about a week or 2,she will fit more comfortably in those cute little outfits, right now just stick to sleepers.
Give it 2 weeks!
Soon very soon you will be saying why do they not fit anymore! Or cutting out the feet to make then last longer.
Not much fits a new born unless you get the preemie clothes but your baby will grow out of that in a week so it is not worth it.
No, there is no size smaller than newborn besides preemie. Your baby is normal 0 to 3 month size. My boys were both normal sized babies and that size also swamped them. They looked fine and perfectly cute in them and no one said a thing. They eventually grew into them and out of them before I even realized it.
I had the same problem. Don’t worry, before you know she’ll be too big for those clothes that are too large now.
How much did she lose? She will gain a half ounce to and ounce a day. She will need the newborn clothes within a couple weeks. Are they newborn or 0-3 months cuz theyare different
same, mine was 6 11 ang 6 flat after a week, we did preemie clothes for a couple of weeks until the newborns fit ok but not great. she’s now at 6month 18 1/2 lbs baby
she caught up quick lol no solids, just breastmilk
My 8 lb 6 oz baby girl, born March 8, discharge weight of 7 lb 13 oz, is having the same issues. I really don’t know what the deal is?!? I was disappointed too, but I guess she will be in them soon enough. I just put her in the big clothes anyway. Our pediatrician told us not to take her out anywhere, anyway for the first couple of weeks so I figure its just us, and her grandma seeing her anyway. But I honestly don’t have an answer to your question, just wanted to tell you I was in the same boat too.
My son was exactly the same size as your daughter when he was born! I was in shock that my newborn clothes didn’t fit him! I sent hubby out for a pack of preemie onsies and 2 preemie outfits! He wore them for 2 weeks and then fit into the newborn outfits after that! You didn’t miss a size……it’s just the way it is. It’s up to you if you want to buy some preemie clothes…..but remember they won’t be in them for long at all! Congrats on the new baby girl!
My daughter was almost exactly that size. 7lbs 7oz and 20". Give her a week or 2 and those cute clothes will fit. For now stick with sleepers or gowns, more comfy for her than most outfits anyway. Don’t bother with the preemie sizes, she’ll grow out of them faster than you can get them all on her. My daughter fit into all of her cute newborn stuff by 2 or 3 weeks old, so not very long for her to just relax in the jammies anyway. Congratulations Momma!
seriously, give it about a week, they’ll fit much sooner than later!
If the newborn clothing fit EXACTLY, you would be buying a larger size in 2 weeks. That doesn’t make sense to anybody. They grow very fast.
NB sizes fit my daughter until she was a month old. I would not run out and buy more things, they will fit her in a week or so. They grow very fast. My daughter only wore size 0-3 months from the time she was one month until two months. By the time she turned two months she was in size 3-6 months, which are huge on her, but shes to long for 0-3 months.
Our baby was 7lb 8oz, 19.5" and wore NB clothes until she was 4.5 months old. I went out and bought preemie clothes for her, they fit until she was about 1.5 months old. She is 5.5 months old and still wearing size nb shoes, and she is right on track with height and weight. So I’d say definitely go out and buy her some clothes that fit!
Oh yes in two weeks you will be contemplating the next size up! It is like that any time you size up, for a little while (about two weeks) you think they are swimming then they fit, then you notice the pants fit but the onsies don’t or vice versa and that’s how it will go till they hit a growth plateau. But at 18 months mine hasn’t hit one yet. 2T shirt size 18 month pants, 24-2T overalls……..
thats life… my daughter was 11 pd 7 oz and she was swamped bymost of the clothes i had. a friend of mine brought me some preemie clothes from her baby who was 6 weeks early and they ftted perfectly. she mentioned that even the preemie clothes were too big for her girl in the beginning. better too big than too small i guess. she will grow into them, trust me, and then she will grow out of them at an alarming rate!!
I wouldfn’t worry about it. You will be surprise in 2 weeks when the clothes that were once enourmous on her will be much too small. For the fisrt year of life a baby almost doubles in size, so don’t worry. I would go to a store and get a few preemie outfits for her maybe if they are really that big.
Clothing sizes are a recommendation. My daughter was six pounds, tow ounces at birth. The only things that fit were Onsies, and Onsie-style T-shirts (these would work with pants as long as the weather is cool) the long night gowns and sleepers without feet. However, most of the time during the first two to three months, she just lived in her diaper anyway.
Now, at six months old, she is wearing three month old clothes. The ones that are three months, as the 3-6 month size clothes are still a bit too big. She has a Onsie style T-shirt that says it is for 0-3 months, but is still too loose on her.
I don’t mind. While she has outgrown a couple of her three month size sleepers, the one she has on now is still big. Also, my MIL seems to think she needs clothes, despite her being at my shower and seeing all that we got. Although, the three to six month size is what we’re lacking a bit of, but it’s cool, after all, yard sale season is starting soon. My mom, who introduced me to rummage sales will buy what we tell her we need, as long as it’s under a dollar. My MIL, thinks nothing of buying new clothes or new anything because she wants it or things she or somebody else needs it. I don’t agree with that, as I’m my mother’s daughter.
Also, there is a chain of consignment shops, Once Upon a Child that my sister says is good. I’ve not been to one yet.
Anyway, I hope I’ve been of some help.
Don’t worry She’ll grow into them in no time, then it’ll be time get more.
Most regular retail store sizes are off in all sets of clothing. Your best bet would either be to return those items or just go out and buy new ones for now. Hartstrings is the one line that I have found that runs profoundly on exact size. Other brands such as Feltman Brothers, Bailey Boys, Peaches-N-Cream, Kissy Kissy, and Vitamin Kids run really well also.
I really hate that those don’t fit her. You can just keep them on her and just have a little onsie on underneath. My best friend has a little girl and she is still tiny even at 4 months. This is what she does.
Hope you find the best solution!
baby Gap makes size "up to 7 pounds" that would probably fit her the best right now. Also, at this age when her mobility is not an issue having clothes that are too big is not a big deal really. I would buy just a few cute outfits that fit perfectly for going out and picture taking, and she can wear the too big stuff at home. She will grow faster than you can imagine!
