Why are so many baby girl clothes either pink or purple?

It’s annoying, isn’t it? Baby clothes have become so sex stereotyped that it’s also next to impossible to find clothes for boys that don’t have a sports theme. When my parents were babies, it was not at all unusual for parents to dress their boys in frilly gowns. In fact, I have a picture of my father wearing one.
I have two girls and people often mistook them for boys, no matter what they were wearing. Apparently, people think that babies that look small and delicate are girls, especially if they have curly hair while those that look large and sturdy are boys. Both of my girls were sturdy and had straight hair.
Because when they’re newborns they all kinda look the same. Clothes that are clearly gendered make it easier for people to tell what gender your baby is.
Is there something wrong with putting a baby girl in something girly, or putting a boy in something boyish?

stereotypical its so annoying and boys get laughed at for liking the colour pink its stupid, its just a colour. The other two answers seem very stupid and for some reason i have been given a thumbs down. There should not be a colour for a gender im guessing these people are going to be the types who wont let their sons do ballet and wont let their daughters do football.

blue for boys and pink for girls.
blue is a boys colour. pink and yellow are girls colours.
Ha. Because ‘girly’ colours are pink and purple, and so people know whether you have a boy or girl they colour coordinate the clothes. I agree though that they should make red etc clothes for girls too.
They are "girl colors" and "boy colors". Most parents have adopted these colors but it doesn’t mean you have to. I am pregnant too, and I still see quite a bit of unisex clothes for babies.
Because babies don’t care.
It’s a tradition that was created for no reason and that has been passed on for many years.
I was at the gynecologist with my GF, and a mother came in with her baby. We struck a conversation, and I realized that it was a girl, and this was important because it looked like a boy — I don’t know — something about the stroller/car-set which were all blue for some reason. I apologized for the misunderstanding, and then my GF came out. I introduced this mother to her, and before I could add anything, she asked "Cute kid, what’s HIS name"…
I was equally embarrassed AND amused…
And yeah, Java Jutee is right — babies just don’t care.

Blue Eyed Christian pretty much said what I believe, too. However, you can put them in all the pink in the world, but SOMEONE, inevitably will still ask you "is it a boy, or a girl"=P
Sometimes when some one says something like " oh what a cute baby boy" and your baby is girl, it is offensive and hurts. And other times, some one might say" oh what a cute baby girl" when your baby is a boy, then that hurts too..
so parents of new babies dress their kids up in pink and purple with pink stuff all around if it is a girl.
And if it is a boy then boyish colors such as blue, grey and black…to reduce the rudeness although unintended it happens
Most likely because newborns pretty much look the same, whether they are a boy or girl.
I know what you mean though, it’s annoying. I have two boys so I’ve never had to buy baby girl clothing but I have noticed that pretty much everything is pink. There are also a lot more clothing for baby girls than baby boys in nearly every store.
Well it looks like you will have to go get some material and sew your little princess some blue, green, yellow and red clothes. I smell a project!
Those are just thought of as "girl" colors.
Personally, I abhor pastels. o.O
If I were to have a female baby, I would just dress her in whatever colors look nice, regardless of whether they’re "boy clothes" or "girl clothes."
When we took our oldest for his first haircut – in engineer striped overalls BTW we were asked if ‘we really wanted to get HER haircut’. I responded: yes, I am very sure I want ti get HIS haircut. MOST babies and toddlers look pretty much alike.
If you want, just convert a T-shirt into a pair of baby teddys. (yes it’s possible).
You can pretty much buy a plain T-shirt (useful when the baby’s the type to puke and do alot of no. 2s), and use the Generation T series, a book series for people (expert sewing not so necessary with all the wonderful simplistic instructions) that love t shirts enough to do anything with it (would be especially useful if you run out of dough and decide to recycle clothes).
Heck, parents do it anyway by having the kidlets run around in adult tees.
