The right time to buy a pair of shoes is when they begin standing or walking. Yes they do grow quickly and have of the time you can’t get there feet into the shoes and if you do then they usually fall off. My daughter had probably 8 pairs of shoes and never wore any of them for more than 5 minutes. I believe newborn shoes are cute for pictures but thats it. I’m getting ready to buy my daughter her first real pair of shoes and she is 9 months old. She will probably grow out of them in just a couple of months but she is standing and she does walk with support. I would just wait unless maybe you want a cute little pair for some pictures or something. You can buy shoes in size newborn/0!
They sell them for 0-3 months, but I haven’t bothered with shoes for my 11 month old yet. She had one pair of sandals and a bunch of hand-me-downs. I could barely get any of them on her feet (due to toe scrunching and just having chubby feet). She would immediately rip them off (socks too) once she was six months old. So, now I just let her go barefoot if inside. They say that when they’re learning to walk, barefoot is best. After that, you want to give them shoes with flexible soles, as those are best for early walkers, both in learning to grip to the floor and for the shape of the foot. Once she learns to walk (probably within the next month), I will be getting her some flexible sole shoes.
My son had shoes to go with outfits but they weren’t anything great. Just more there to look cute. Now that he is standing he has a few pairs of really good shoes.
I never put shoes on my son. The only thing I ever used (and it was rarely) were Robeez. I need to go shopping for his first pair of real shoes soon because he’s very close to walking on his own.
My daughter had two pairs of shoes before she learned to walk and they were both for pictures. I bought one pair, her grandma bought the other. When she learned to walk, I got her her first pair of "real" shoes so she could walk outside. They say shoes with a flexible sole are the best for the first pair. Thats what she had, they kind of looked like tennis shoes. And yes, their feet grow very quickly. You’ll have to buy him a new pair of shoes at least once a year, and new boots every year for winter (if it snows where you live).
they sell shoes in a size 0. i don’t buy shoes until baby starts to stand and walk. babies don’t really need shoes if they aren’t walking outside. and yes, they grow really fast–like they triple their size in just the first week.
keep shoes for when baby is so small he’s not yet crawling, and for when he’s so big he’s wanting to walk everywhere when you go to town. Otherwise its best he go bare foot. Shoes can hinder the feet bone development, tendon and ligament development in the feet, co-ordination, balance and sensory knowledge.
Socks or bare feet is best.
to answer your questions:
- all babies get cold hands and feet because their circulation is poor at first. booties and mittens help them stay warm. Using socks as booties and mittens will save you a lot of bother and you’ll get more use out of them too. i found booties and mittens would get worked off in the blankets, but socks would stay on.
- their feet grow quickly just like the rest of their bodies. expect to go up at size each month for the first 3 mths, then a size each 3 months after that until he’s 1.
- avoid buying shoes until he’s a toddler who wants to walk on gravel, shops, footpaths. If walking on grass or indoors barefoot is best. he may not be ready to walk everywhere outside the yard until he’s 2. If he’s still getting about in a stroller/pram, don’t bother with shoes. Once he’s on his feet more then he’s sitting it’s shoes time. Put it off as long as you can.
- you can buy tennis shoes for 1mth olds at best and less – they are super cute too
If you only knew how many comments I got about our son not wearing shoes! Arggh! I’d do it al over again though! Babies don’t need shoes! And the only reason I ended up putting anything on our son was so that his socks would stay on (he was born during the summer, so he didn’t need anything his feet for a while) We ended up with a pair of hand me down Robeez, which were great – but they are expensive. They have flexible soles and elastics around the ankles to keep things in place. I later found out that LL Bean has the same type of flexible soled shoe called Beanie Booties. They come in many different colors, and you can grab them when they are on sale for about $11! You can’t beat that! I’d grab one pair in 0-6 months and then another different design for 6-12 if you can get them when they are at the sale price. Plus, if you don’t care for them, LL Bean has a fantastic return policy – but I guarantee you that you’ll love them! Good luck! Don’t bother with the hard soled shoes… allow your little boy to be comfortable and be able to feel what is beneath him when he’s learning to walk and get a feel for his surroundings.
