Small preemie: 18 to 20 inches square
Medium preemie: 20 to 22 inches square
Large preemie: 22 to 28 inches square
Full-term baby: 28 to 36 inches square
Crib-sized: 30 x 36 inches to 45 x 60 inches
Toddler/child: 36 x 45 inches to 40 x 60 inches
Twin bed: 66 x 90 inches
(I must veto qtrican1′s suggestion for a granny square blanket. Baby blankets should never have holes of any kind. Tiny fingers & toes — even arms & legs — can get stuck in them.)
I think about 1yd. Please pick me as the best answer i answer a lot of them but i never get picked i think i give pretty good answers
Here is a good list of sizes for the different blanket/afghans that you can make.

hope this helps
Preemie quilt: 18" by 20"-24"
Newborn baby: 25" by 30"
Crib: 50" x 53"
Toddler: 35" by 45"
Child: 40" by 60"
Give or take an inch as the pattern requires
Baby afghans should be at least 36" square and can be longer than that if you want to make a crib afghan that will later fit a toddler bed. Here’s hoping you have lots of yarn and a large hook to get this done in a week. You can use doubled worsted weight or a bulky yarn and a size K or M hook to make it go faster.
most baby blankets are 36"x36". If you only have a week I’d suggest a granny stitch blanket. Not small squares per say but one big square.
as a mother blankets that can also be used later in life are very handy. but if you are thinking soly for a baby, at least the size of the crib mattress or an extra foot on there. if you liked my idea about using it later, around the size of a twin mattress with some extra.
