What clothes should I buy? Preemie or new born?
I am a first time mom, almost 23 weeks pregnant and just found out I am having a little girl (hurray)! I would like to start buying clothes and everything but I’m not sure what size to buy. You see, I have to have an early C-section at 36 weeks due to a previous pregnancy that, unfortunately, didn’t end well. Should I buy preemie clothes or do you think new born clothes will be fine? And if I should go with preemie clothes, does anyone know any good sites to buy from?! I just don’t want to buy a bunch of stuff that I’m not going to use! Thanks for the help!

I’d buy just a few preemie outfits–my 6lb 11oz full term baby fit into preemie clothes. You’ll want a nice fitting outfit for newborn pics. Don’t go crazy though, they grow out of preemie and newborn sizes in a matter of weeks. I would just buy footie pjs and onesies too, cute outfits are a pain on little babies because they’re all cramped up still from being in the womb. Carter’s makes really cute and easy to get on newborn and preemie outfits.
I would go newborn. It doesn’t matter if they are a bit loose and if you are having a 36 week c-section ur bub might need to be in a humidicrib where they dont wear clothes anyway
if you buy preemie don’t take the tag off of more than one outfit just in case you have a chunker. i would buy mostly 0-3 months with some newborn thrown in. its easier to wear them big than too small
I bought preemie clothes, and boy am I glad I did! Newborn was too small for my baby boy and I carried full term. he was 7 pounds, three oz, and 20 inches, healthy- but for some reason preemie just fit him better!
I only used them for a week. But I got mine from walmart (I know, I know.) and target. AND EBAY! I got the best deals. 40 dollars for a bulk lot and I have enough clothes to last me three months, my babies dresser is overflowing!
at 36 weeks I don’t think that they are classed as premature…buy newborn, worst case baby will grow into them. When you are measured closer to the time the midwife will be able to tell you if you are measuring small. If this turns out to be the case you can always buy a couple of cheap multi packs to put you on (are you UK?..primark do multi packs at £8.50 for 6 vests and outfits ie vest/bodysuit/top/trousers/jacket and hat for £12.00 (there or there abouts..it’s cheap anyway!!). Good luck and congratulations…remember, the docs wouldn’t ever plan to C Section a baby before it’s safe unless it was unavoidable…I’m sure she’ll be filling out the newborn outfits no probs xx
Edit….I lied sorry…apparently 37 weeks is classed as full term sorry xx I’d still buy newborn and see what happens as you progress though. xx
I would buy newborn clothes.
At 36 weeks your baby will probably be in newborn sizes (mine was, at not quite 37 weeks), and if it turns out he’s going to be little, you can buy some preemie clothes later on when you know, and keep the newborn ones for him to grow into.
I would say newborn.
Even if she does fit into preemie, she’d probably grow out of them pretty fast. My son was born at 37 weeks and we barely had any newborn clothes-maybe two sleepers. He wore mostly 0-3 months, which were a little big, but he grew into them fast. So maybe you could maybe even get mostly 0-3 months. Congratulations!
Congrats on finding out its a girl.I did not expect to need a preemie size but my little girl came out weighing 5 lbs 12 oz at 37 weeks. Her dad had to run out and buy her preemie and newborn clothes that actually fit her.I suggest maybe adding some items of clothing to your baby registry, assuming you are going to have a shower.Various sizes but include a few preemie and newborn. You can always take them back if they aren’t needed.Congrats again and good luck.
buy some preemie, not a lot though (try to grab some clearanced items now). and take a newborn outfit and a preemie outfit with you to the hospital. I went full term and jacob was 6 lbs 4 oz 19.5 inches and wore preemie for 2 weeks as well as certain newborn outfits. I had nothing but a onesie to take him home in because the outfit I brought for him was too big at 0-3 months. My cousin gave me a buin of clothes to borrow and since her son ws a preemie I luckily had those on hand at home. So as soon as we were home from the hospital I rummaged through the bin and took out a bunch of the sleepers and some onesies.
Why not have it both ways? I would buy about 4 preemie outfits (two gowns, two onesies maybe) and about 10 newborn. Even if she’s early, you’ll be amazed at how fast she’ll grow out of even newborn, but you should be prepared just in case you need a smaller size for a week or so.
Are you having a baby shower at all? In my experience, I didn’t have to buy clothes at all; they were all gifts and hand-me-downs from other mothers!
I would buy some preemie but keep tags on and receipts at hand.
One friend of mine had twins at 36 weeks last year and they were 4lb7oz and 5lb11oz and both were in preemie clothes for ages.
But another friend recently had her baby at 37 weeks and he was only just 6pd but long and skinny. None of her newborns fit either, they had to go out and buy preemie ’00000′ clothes (in australia our baby sizes go by ‘o’s) they day after she got home. At about 6 weeks he fit into newborn ’0000′ size clothes.
At 36 weeks your baby won’t have had that last month to put on the fat deposits so she may be a little on the skinny side but I’m sure she’ll be totally healthy!
Target do sell a small selection of preemie ‘ooooo’ size clothes here is AUS but ebay is a great place to look. At least that way you can get some preemie stuff a lot cheaper and if you don’t use it you haven’t wasted tons of money and can just resell it.

the dr should be able to give u a weight as the pregnancy continues
they can be close . i would by newborn o-3 but not many u will be surprised how fast a baby will grow out of clothes. and people love to buy baby clothes for u. u will have so many clothes. i think you should by diapers. if u r not proud u can get nice used baby clothes. they grow so Fast they are hardly worn. t-shirts and oneies are good to buy not to many in any one size though.
my son weight 10lbs 4oz so he started out in 3-6mo clothes and doubled his weight by 6 mo .so its hard to know just dont by to many keep tags and recipts so you can return them if u need to. good luck take care u r blessed
my son was born at 36 weeks and i had to use preemie clothes at first because the newborns literally swallowed him. he grew out fo them quick though
36 weeks is not that early. I would buy a couple of newborn sized outfits, but mostly 0-3 months. In fact, if you and or your husband are very tall, I would skip the newborn size, and just go with 0-3 months.
my lil one came out at 7lbs 13 ounces and came home from the hospital at 7lbs 6.
he fit in premie then. well for like a week week and a 1/2. but he fit in newborn stuff til like 2 mnths and he still fits into his 0-3 mnths pants[[the longer ones]]
now he fits into the 6-9 and 9-12 mnths stuff and he 6 mtnhs
