One of my girls fell tonight (27 month old twins).
She and her sister were debating on who was going to play the maracas so I sent them into their room to get the rest of their instruments so we could all play on my bed and I heard a loud splat in her room. I didn’t see her fall but when I came in she was on all fours and was crying very hard and shaking too.
I carried her onto my bed (where my 7 month old was, I didn’t want to leave him alone for longer than 10 seconds) and looked her over very well and couldn’t find any obvious injuries other than bruising on her right thigh and some really mild abrasions where her clothing rubbed against her toddler skin. Poor girlie! She calmed down laying on my bed after I gave her binkies (because I am a softie) so I turned on Olivia on Noggin and went to fix dinner. She wasn’t crying or uncomfortable and I checked again a few times to see if anything was swelling and nothing was so I didn’t think a lot of it.
Well, she didn’t want to get up to eat dinner and when I tried to coax her she really got upset so I just let her be and decided to let her eat with my hubby when he got home. Her twin sister and little brother were hungry so I fed them and let her be.
Well, when hubby got home she still refused to walk.
He ended up sitting on our bed with her and feeding her dinner himself because we wanted her to eat. She did sit up and eat on our bed.
So I went and got a bowl of ice cream after dinner as a super special treat and sat next to the bed to see if she would get up for it. Her sister had a few bites of my ice cream and she tried to get up but she said her leg hurt so I went over to the bed and we shared the ice cream.
I looked at her again. I wiggled all her joints from her toes to her hips and she didn’t cry. I pressed down to apply pressure like the physicians’ assistants did to me the 6857576 times I have been in for a soft tissue injury and no pain or crying. I pressed on her shins all over and no pain or crying.
the only time she cries and tells me her leg hurts is when I want her to walk.
If she still won’t walk in the morning I am bringing her to the pediatrician and I am kind of worried. Not that she is severely injured because I know she isn’t. If she had been swollen even a little… or if she cried when I wiggled/pressed on different parts of her leg she would be at the ER probably still waiting to be seen right now. I decided to give it until morning and take her to the pediatrician if necessary.
Do you think that was the right choice? If she DOES have a fracture… I hate to even think this… but am I going to be suspect because I:
Don’t know how it happened
I waited to bring her in
She has a fracture?
I hate to even think about this because I know she fell and that I would never harm a hair on my precious baby’s heads. I hate that I even have to be paranoid like this. *sigh*
I’m so glad my pedi office knows me well and knows how healthy they always have been.
