My son is 7 weeks old. Since he was 3 weeks he’s had a rash. I hadn’t given it a second thought, I assumed it was the normal rash all newborns get or a heat rash since it’s been hot here.
But the rash is now starting to spread. It started on his face. It’s now on his face, over his scalp, on the front and back of his neck, his shoulders, and his arms. It’s now starting to go down his chest, too. He has dry, crusty patches on his ears that split open and weep. His skin (cheeks, forehead, scalp) are really dry, too. I’m beginning to think it’s more than just the typical newborn rash.
It’s Sunday so I can’t phone to make a doctor’s appointment until tomorrow, and even then since it’s not an emergency I wouldn’t expect to get in until the end of the week at the earliest. meanwhile, is there something I can use when I bath him or a nice cream I could slather on him to help soften his skin, etc? Something I could get in a store today? I also live in Canada if that helps with suggesting brands. Thanks!
(on a side note, I am exclusively breastfeeding and other friends who have breastfed are suggesting that he has a sensitivity to the milk products I am consuming. are there any other symptoms I should be aware of other than the skin issues if that is true?)
(It’s not cradle cap)
It can’t be cradle cap. Actually, what’s on his scalp is very minimal, there is no flaking or anything on his scalp. when i say his cheeks, scalp, and forehead are dry I mean it just feels like he has dry skin, with the bumps (what I think is a rash). The bumps turn red when he’s warm, but otherwise the "rash" just looks like little raised bumps that feel dry when you touch them.. His scalp isn’t flaking or greasy looking like with cradle cap. Really, the only spot that is cracked, scaling, and weeping are the soft parts of his ear lobes. I know it’s hard for me to describe but my daughter had cradle cap, pretty obscurely, too. There is no way that this can be even obscure cradle cap. Thanks for reading my description. Anyway, just looking for something to help with it temporarily.
I didn’t really mean for a diagnosis.
Aveeno is available in Canada. Very common here.
