Plase help me out with my nursing presentation!!
1.E. What taboos, beliefs, superstitions, etc surround a pregnant woman in this culture. (Are there activities she cannot participate in? Foods she should or should not eat? Clothing that should or should not be worn? Sexual activity ok or not ok during pregnancy?) Give rationales for these beliefs or practices.
F. Describe the involvement and role of the husband during the pregnancy, labor, delivery, and postpartum period and care of the newborn baby. What other significant family members or cultural members are important during these periods.
G. Specifically address dietary practices during pregnancy. Are there forbidden foods? Foods that help the mother or baby? What does she do about nausea or morning sickness? Is pica common? Other common cravings or foods that culture feels are important for the pregnant woman or her baby. Is it acceptable to gain weight? How much weight gain should be expected?
H. Are prenatal classes offered? Attended by the mother? If so, who goes with her?
I. Is there a limit on how many children this woman may have? If so, is abortion permitted? Encouraged? Offered? Forced? If so, how is it funded? Who does it? Is one sex preferred over another? Is this a consideration when deciding whether to continue the pregnancy?
3. Labor and childbirth
A. Where will she likely deliver her baby?
B. Who will be present?
C. Will she want pain medication during labor? Epidural?
D. How, typically, will she express discomfort? (will she be verbal, loud, stoic, quiet and reflective? Is it ok to show discomfort? What measures will she use to help with the discomfort? Will anyone assist her?
E. Who will cut the cord? Any beliefs or practices related to the umbilical cord?
F. Are there any beliefs or practices related to the placenta?
4. Newborn care
A. Can she hold the baby immediately? Explore bonding with this culture. How
do the moms and dads relate to the new baby? Will dad help with initial newborn
care? Feeding? Diaper changing? Bathing? Anyone else? Will they want pictures?
B. Is breastfeeding common? Is the colostrum ok?
C. Are currently recommended Western immunizations ok for the baby?
D. Any particular customs, beliefs, practices related to the newborn, the umbilical cord, clothing? feeding, the fontanels? Meconium? etc? Is it okay for others to look at the baby and talk to it?
E. When will the baby be named? Is there a method for picking the name? Is there a blessing, baptism, special welcoming ceremony for the new baby?
F. Will siblings visit the baby in the hospital?
G. Who will be providing most of the care to the newborn when it goes home?
Mom? Grandma? Other. Are visitors permitted? Restricted? Describe.
H. Will pictures be taken of the new baby?
I. If the baby is a boy, will it be circumcised? If so, by whom and when?
J. Are there particular beliefs or rituals if the baby has birth defects?
K. What is done if the baby is stillborn?
5. Postpartum period
A. How soon following delivery will the new mother eat? Any particular foods?
Any particular beliefs related to hot or cold foods or drinks?
B. How soon can she shower and wash her hair?
C. How soon can she resume normal activities and go out in public?
D. When can she resume sexual activity?
E. Are postpartum blues common? Recognized? Is there a stigma associated with postpartum blues or depression? How is it treated?
6. Cultural data
A. What are the infant and maternal mortality rates in the cultural origin? How do
those statistics compare with those of the United States? What is your explanation
for the variance?
B. Does the woman make her own choices for care provider? Medication during
labor? Breastfeeding or bottle feeding? If not, who makes them?
C. Is it ok for her to receive blood transfusions if she hemorrhages?
D. Is contraception following delivery acceptable? Forbidden? Explain.
E. Approximately how many individuals from your cultural group reside in
America? Primarily where are they located?
Actually, this is the INTERVIEW portion of my presentation. I live in New Mexico, there are no French people to interview!
