Hello folks… I have a 6 y.o. black lab & bloodhound mix. He’s a GREAT dog…def the best dog I’ve ever had! He’s great with kids and people in general. BUT there’s 1 problem…
The problem, which just started recently in the past month or so, is that he gets into the trash and scatters it EVERYWHERE in the kitchen.
Here’s a little background:
He’s such a great dog when I’m home which is pretty much all the time other than when I’m working so he’s home alone for about 12 hours per day. He’s been on this same schedule for almost 2 years and I’ve NEVER had this or any other problems with him. He’s just a real chilled out dog! There was 1 time about a year ago when I left a plate on the kitchen counter and he got "stood up" on his 2 hind legs and punished it…gone before I could count to 3. So I decided to buy baby gates and put them up to block the 2 entrances to my kitchen. Everything was great until about a month ago when he broke down the baby gate and got in and ate all kinds of stuff that was in the trash. The trashcan is a taller one WITH A LID. What he does is knocks it over and it’s history…TRASH EVERYWHERE!!! I figured the gates would be good enough but obviously they’re not. He weighs 114 lbs and I guess goes through them with ease when he wants to.
I had just taken the trash out lsat night so the only things in there were some paper towels and other random garbage BUT NO FOOD! I bought 2 diff kinds of repellent and have tried both with no success. I sprayed the inside of the can as well as the inside of the trash bag hoping it would keep him away.
I really don’t want to move the can which would be the obvious solution…there’s pretty much nowhere else to put it. I’ve read about using a smaller can and putting it into a kitchen cabinet with child safety locks but like I said I’d rather not have to move the can or get a new smaller one to put in the cabinet.
My goal with this is to hopefully get some more new ideas of possible solutions…
Things to remember:
He weighs 114 lbs.
When he got into the trash last night there was NOT any food in it.
He breaks down the baby gate I assume pretty easily.
The current trash can is a larger can and has a top that closes.
I’d rather not have to move or get a new trash can…size doesn’t matter he’ll get inside it regardless I think. By moving the trash can I would just be masking his issue…I really just want to make him stop!
I’ve also put hot sauce in the trash bag itself and once again had no luck. It seems like NOTHING will keep him out!
My next move is to buy a crate and stick him in the crate while I’m at work during the day. I’d really rather not do that either.
I also read about somehow putting mouse traps on or around the trash can which is something I have not tried yet because I also have a cat and wouldn’t want that poor guy to caught up in a trap especially when he hasn’t done anything wrong.
Please leave constructive ideas/remedies if you do respond to this. Don’t need people bit$%ing about anything…

I’m basically just hoping to get some new fresh ideas from you guys…!!!

THANKS IN ADVANCE FOLKS!!!

We have tried everything to keep her from climbing over the gate at night. She gets highly distressed when locked in her crate for the entire night so we are keeping her in the kitchen. We got her at 6 months old and she came from a shelter. So far we have not been able to keep her contained except in the bathroom but this is not a long term possibility because in order to do that, we have two baby gates stacked on top of each other to keep her in the bathroom which makes the bathroom unusable when she is in there. We want to keep her in the kitchen. We have the two gates stacked in one doorway but that isn’t possible in the other entry way so we have a three foot sheet of plywood attached to a lower baby gate but she still manages to climb the wood. How can we stop this behavior at night and when we have to be away from home to go to work or even to the store? We are slowly losing our minds!!

The entrance to the dining room is about 10 feet wide (do they have baby gates that big?), and the space between the kitchen and dining room is not set up for a baby gate. It’s hard to explain, but there’s a walk way between the fridge and some built-in shelving, and I’m pretty sure no baby gate could be put there. Maybe, but I doubt it.

I saw this: http://www.babysupermall.com/main/products/kdc/kdc07080.html but it’s pretty pricey. Is this the best option?

My daughter is 15 months old and she is a climber. At 11 months she had mastered climbing out of her crib so we had to move her to a toddler bed which works great except now she climbs the baby gate that we have in her door way *which wouldn’t be too bad but her bedroom is upstairs*! She also climbs the gate we have in the hallway to the stairs! I have tried nicely telling her no and telling her that she can get owies, when that didn’t work I gave her hands a little swat that didn’t work, and even gave her a little swat on the bottom *which I hate to do!!* and all that did was cause a "Brooklyn Melt Down" as we call them around here and then she was back to climbing the gate. I just don’t know what do to get her to stop. I’m worried she’s gunna climb over the gate some morning and fall down the stairs!! Any ideas how I can get her to stop climbing the gates??

Do you have a wide baby gate?

And, if so, can I have it? :P

We’re baby proofing this weekend and need a pretty wide/long baby gate to section off the kitchen from what will be our living room(ugh, yes, we’re also rearranging furniture this weekend). It needs to be at least 6 feet across.

Does anyone know of any that are this length that also have a possible door(although this isn’t necessary)?

We have railings at the top of the stairs and I bought the kidco no drill baby gate installation kits and a baby gate but it turns out my railings aren’t straight across and the way they are placed it won’t work to put a baby gate on. I am in desperate need to put a gate in front of these stairs as the second I set my son down he goes straight for the stairs… has anyone had this problem with gates? Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could put in front of the stairs that would work just as good?!
The Kidco no drill kit works perfect for our other railing to attach the gate to… but our stairs going down the 2 posts for the railing aren’t straight across so the gate would be going diagonal and I don’t think the latches will work then so I’m wondering if there is some other type of gate I can put there that it wont matter if it is diagonal

I need to find a Baby gate..?

I need to find some kind of baby gate or a way to block my daughter from getting to the stairs. The way that the house is set up the only way I can see putting a gate is diagonal and it’s 64 inches. The gates that I have seen sold in stores are all only around 42 inches long.
I can’t think of anything that I can use there to keep her safe (other than a gate) that would still allow me to be able to step over it.
If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.
I’ve looked up gates online and they are like and thats more than I want to spend.
Thanks for the help!

Trying to find a baby gate?

I need a baby gate to keep my pets in one room and away from my baby but I’m having a hard time finding one that would fit. Does anyone know where I can get a gate that will fit an opening more than 9 feet? or know a website that custom makes them?

Does anyone know of a baby gate that is 11ft long?

We are moving into a new house next month which has a formal dining room in an awkward place, so instead we are turning it into our daughters play room. The opening on one side is about 11ft (132 inches) and the other side is about 8 ft. I am looking to make it a ‘room’ with baby gates so that when I am cooking dinner or something I can close it off and she won’t be able to come into the kitchen or wander away where I can’t see her. I have been able to find plenty of 8 ft baby gates, but none for 11ft.
Does anyone know of an 11 ft baby gate, or have any suggestions of something I could do?

PS-I have looked at the superyard gate type things but the room we are planning to use it much bigger than that so I don’t want to have to cut her space in half because I can’t find a gate..
