Baby #1 ,12 weeks pre born 2 lb 13 oz, They are babies for sooooo long when they start out so little.
At 6mths was 11lb 24oz, 22.5in by 12mths 27inches & 16lb. He started school 5yrs4mths in size 4 pants that lasted until year 2 (7yo!).
Hes now 14 1/2 yrs is 105lb 5"6 & still slight build but is athletic, plenty of muscle not just skin & bone but still not a bit of visible fat on him (lucky boy!!).
Everyone says they catch up by 2yo & by milestones most do. Ive found with our son though he was always the smallest in his class until he hit puberty then he caught up physically, hes no longer the smallest, just average now.
He did use his size to his advantage though. At 18mths we cgot him involved in gymnastics to help muscle strenght & gross motor skills (2 areas most prems need support). At 6yo he started competing in comps & at 9yo was recruited by our states institute of sport gymnastics development program with a view of going on to compete at the Olympics. Unfortunatly an injury (not prem related & now fully healed) stopped him training for 3 mths & as a then 12yo boy he wanted to be with his mates not training 30hrs a week so that was that. Still he gained great strenght, skills & can balance on a pin head so he will take that with him for life.
Look at the positives:
*Has no known carryovers (other than being smaller) from being prem that will impact his life or learning. Many have life long therapies & or disabilities
*Hes making his milestones
*Youre getting great value out of his clothes!
Consider too that BF babies (even term) do tend to be smaller than formula baies. No judgement just knowledge passed on from our many nurses. BF babies metabolise faster & use everything so tend to have less bodyfat. Most growth charts I saw were for formula fed babies as there are more of them. By baby #2 I just gave up as long as he was going up (allowing some stagnent times like starting to crawl etc when they just burn energy), settled, slept (occasionally lol), active, happy & 6-8 wet nappies a day I was happy!.
BTW My 3rd was born 6 weeks early at 6mths was13lb too!
Are you or the baby’s father a small stature? You say your grandmother was.
He sounds to be an OK weight. They say that a baby should roughly double their birth weight by 6 months (he has), and triple by a year. My kids never tripled by a year, but were in no way underweight.
He sounds fine to me
my daughter was born full term at only 6lbs 3oz and at 10 months weighs over 20lbs. she goes to child care during the week and has always been the smallest bub in the room. there is nothing wrong with being on the small side. it’s a reflection of his genes.
in our family, my husband’s mom is only 4ft 11in. my husband is 5ft 7in and i am only 5ft 4in. our daughter is not going to be the tallest woman in the world and we are ok with that. we just hope she is taller than her grandmother.
long story short, you have nothing to be concerned about. take comfort in the fact that you have a beautiful, healthy bub.
I don’t think you should be worried at all! My cousin is 2 years old and was VERY small as a baby, but now he is very healthy and has grown up well! I wish you well!
may just be a petite baby! its okay! I had a son and he was 4lb 13 oz when he was born and I thought he was never going to get in regular sized clothes.. nutramigen is good its synthetic and easier on the stomach but also ask about neosure..beside that it just sounds like hes skinny thats all.. with preemies they just dont get that gerber chunkyness i wouldnt worry from what you desribed he sounds like hes on track …by the time hes 12 months youll be suprised how big hes gotten!
my son is almost 6 months and just 13 pounds he was 2 months early! but he is always smaller then babies his age which is fine! he is also very lean his month old cousin has more leg rolls then him! babies come in different sizes don’t worry! my Friend has a baby who was 20 pounds at 6 months he was huge!
