My baby shower is this weekend- I hope we don't get too many clothes. Did you?
Our baby boy is due October 11th. A few of my gfs threw me a shower last weekend and they made a up a clotheslines of cute baby clothes. (They took the tags off.) I already bought a bunch of baby clothes as well beforehand and my mom already bought some clothes too. I think my MIL bought some clothes and my SIL too. Honestly we are all set with clothes, especially newborn clothes. I have a family shower this weekend of older relatives and older friends of my moms. My mom told everyone where I was registered for the things we need. My mom said an aunt told her she was going to JC penney and buying clothes for the baby. I did not register there. I was at a baby shower a couple of months ago, and it seemed that no one bought things off her registry, just bought a ton of clothes. she got way too many clothes, and they weren’t for the appropriate season with no receipts. I am not ungrateful for any gift, I just want it to be useful. Did this happen to you or someone you know?
I did not register for clothes for this reason.

I got TONS of clothes for my shower. I swear my little girl has more clothes than paris hilton. I knew this would happen so i didnt buy any clothes at all during my pregnancy. I only bought the outfit i wanted for her hospital pictures and her coming home outfit. Luckily my shower was in february at the start of the spring season and we got lots of spring summer clothes that were just in season.
No matter what, you’ll get things you dont need, or already have. With the items that i did not have a receipt for, i took them to target, walmart, and kohls and they did returs without receipts. I got store credit, and now use the store credit to buy diapers, or whatever comes up. It worked out perfectly!
it happens……
just take back what you can, its not tasteless to do so….
donate what you dont use to someone who needs it!! ( i suggest going on Freecycle.org)
Yes, this same thing happened to me. I have a lot of clothes that my son never wore. Also, he is very warm blooded, which you don’t know til they get here, and so we had tons of fleece type stuff that he couldn’t wear. So, I put everything in totes and I’ll keep them for the next one and see if the seasons will work out there.
I also didn’t get a lot of things that were on my registry. My husband and I had to buy the exersaucer and swing and other big ticket items.
I completely understand where you are coming from.
Yep, this is what ALWAYS happens, which is why I didn’t have a baby shower OR a wedding shower. Plus I think they’re just a lame cover for asking shamelessly requesting presents. Just my opinion.
You’ll have to graciously accept them and then perhaps donate them to a women’s shelter or children’s hospital (NOT Goodwill).
Congrats on the baby.
Yep, it happened to me too. People just LOVE buying the cute little outfits. Return as much as you can and the rest you can sell on Ebay or Craigslist or give to charity.
You will go through alot of clothes even if you think you have enough you will more then likely be looking for more later on but if you believe you have too many donate them to a crisis pregnancy center or to a Department of Children and Familes aka DCF. Also giving some away in the Christmas drop boxes for needy familes or Red Cross is a good idea. There is always something you can do if you have too many of something and someone is always out there needing what you just might have too much of.
I received soooo many clothes (and didn’t have any on my baby registry) and his is already growing out of them-they were mostly 0-3 months but he was born big at 8lbs, 4 ozs and already wears 3-6 months. What works out nice is my sister is pregnant and due in Mar so at least she will get alot of nice clothes hardly worn and I am definately going to tell her to not put clothes on her registry because people buy them anyway and she will have plenty. If you don’t have anyone to give them to then, save if your going to have another baby or give to charity.
People love buying baby clothes…they’re little and cute and just generally irresistible. I didn’t register for any and still ended up with a ton, especially smaller ones. The good news is, babies can go through clothes so quickly (sometimes 4-5 outfits in a day), so you might actually need them. Also, personally, I would skip the "newborn" size altogether and go straight to 0-3 months–my daughter has "newborn" clothes that she was too big for from day one. Some stores, including BabiesRUs, Wal-Mart, and Target, will let you exchange things without a receipt if the store carries that item. This could be something to try with common brands of clothes like Carter’s.
Yes I am sure you will get tons of clothes, but people love buying clothes for little ones, I know I do! But you could always return some and get clothes for later in the future or take the money and put it towards another baby item.
Cowgirl is right !! A Pregnancy center that has a teenage mom would greatly appreciate clothes and such. I, myself, received used items like clothes (not many), crib, swing, bathtubs, and so on. I used them until my son outgrew and then passed them on to someone else that could use them. They weren’t snobby about receiving used merchandise, but were grateful that I saved them some money !!! I even took some of the merchandise I received and re-gifted them at other baby showers. Some of it was used and the recipeint knew beforehand and some of it was new. Each was truely grateful. I’m sure that you will experience the same thing.
I had my shower on Saturday and actually looking back we got no clothes…our were mainly toys and blankets and accessories…all lovely
It is nice to get gifts but you do end up with some absolutely…erm…dodgy outfits…why would you want to dress your baby up as a rabbit is beyond me? We were a bit ruthless and once we had them for a couple of months got rid of them. Should’ve really passed them onto the local Childrens Hospital or charity shop. I know where your coming from but once you have a baby no matter how big your house is, it will become very over loaded so there’s not enough room for things your just not gonna use. Just hope that tags are left on. Enjoy yourself though.
i got more clothes than wanted..my shower was this past april and i wasnt ungrateful either i was upset b.c no one even looked off my registry besides one of my best friends.and that was it..and they did the same thing bought clothes that were not right for the seasons…good luck and congrats..
Not only did I get crates full of clothes, I got duplicates, even triplets of the same stuff, I got the things I specifically told people I didn’t want, and even the most useless ridiculous stuff. When it comes to babys it’s not just mommy and daddy who loose their mind. You are going to end up with more stuff then you can store. Find a consignment shop, you can exchange and sell clothes there. Return as much as you can to the stores, you will NEED diapers not 50 pairs of clothes. And if you know a little about sewing, use the extra clothes to make a baby quilt, just cut and sew, it’s really simple. And don’t be afraid to ask for gift reciepts, especially if you specified what you did and didn’t need. Honestly I had so many clothes, I gave half to my friend who just had twins, and still had enough to make a quilt. Get creative, you can even sew together the excess baby clothes to make baby diapers.
People often cannot resist buying baby clothes. They have such a magnetic appeal. Also, we seldom have the opportunity to buy baby clothes so we take full advantage when we do get an opportunity. Hopefully you can return some and get something practical if you prefer.
Be glad the newborn baby clothes expense is handled by others since they will outgrow those clothes fast. It is nice to have them for the short term anyway, especially if you are an active person and love to be out and about.
Another thing is you will be surprised how many variations there are to the size "newborn" and some may fit longer than you expect.
Here’s an idea: Maybe you could request a friend to have a "baby gear" shower vs. simply a baby shower for your next shower.
