it’s an old fashioned rule that you only get a shower for your first baby. after that your should keep everything for subsequent babies and then not need anything. i think this is an outdated practice and believe every new baby deserves a shower. and anyway, things change so quick now that by the time a new baby comes along. all the safety issues and gadgets are new and we want them too.
I dont know who made that rule up!

It’s not a "rule" but in reality you are just supposed to have one, with your first child…I’nm not sure why though.
I think your in-law was just trying to explain away her cheapness and her reason for not wanting to give a gift.
New baby = new shower. The gifts might be a little different (since you already have basics from a first kid) but the spirit is the same.
that’s ridiculous. it’s not called a firstborn shower!!
I dont think thats a rule. Thats weird dont you think? I say one baby equals one baby shower. Do what you want!
Having one baby shower used to be true, apparently not anymore.
i have two daughters and i have never heard of this!i also had more then one baby shower with each child..several people hosted one for me…i am guessing that someone who is really cheap made this up ??????
no that not true my family never gave me not one baby shower and I have 5 childern so maybe our mother inlaws now each other
No, there is not rules to having babyshowers. If someone wants to throw a baby shower for you then great. I have had a baby shower for all 3 of my boys and now Im having a shower for my baby girl. Its for fun, family , friends and socializing. Every baby deserves a celebration. And you dont always have the baby stuff from the previous baby, so you will need new things. Its great to have showers for all of them.
I call BS on that one. I’m going to have another one with this pregnancy… Heck, it’s been EIGHT YEARS since I’ve been pregnant.
I don’t know who made up that rule, but it’s completely senseless.
Now, don’t get me wrong… If you have a two-year old boy, and you’re going to have another boy, there’s no reason for the shower, as you should still have everything that you need. If you’re going to have a girl, though, and you already have a boy, NOT having another shower is rather, well, senseless. Babies are expensive!
it’s kind of a courtesy rule, especially in big families, so it’s not like asking for family-funded welfare so you can keep having a million kids and expecting the others in your family to provide for you. if your family’s got the bucks, have as many showers as you want! it’s just considered rude to invite people to a party only because they’re obligated to send a gift whether or not they attend.
There is no hard and fast rule governing baby showers. Showers, of any kind, started out to help the new bride or mother gather the things needed to start a new household or family. Now, showers are more celebrations and a chance to party with friends. Enjoy as many as you can!!
That sounds like a myth to me.
I have had a baby shower for each child, so I have had 6, because I typically have 2 showers for each child.
And….if you are worried that YOU and the baby should or are only going to have 1 shower, arrange for the father of the baby to have his own shower too. Yes men are given babyshowers too!!!
Yes that is what they told me when i was pregnant the second time. Your first pregnancy and that is it unless you are having twins or something is what everyone told me. it sucks and is a stupid way but i guess people don’t like to buy gifts for someone for more than one baby shower. your family and good friends will bring you something in the hospital thoughgod luck
You are allowed one baby shower per baby. If you’re gutsy enough to have another baby , then you deserve another baby shower don’t you think? Sounds like you have cheap in laws. After all they don’t have to bring a gift. They can just show up and have fun but then everyone would know just how cheap they are!
I have never heard of this either and I have 4 kids and had a baby shower for each one of them. A baby shower is to get thigns for the baby not so much the parents so, you are supposed to have one for each child.
i don’t think , my cuz had 3 kids and a baby shower for all 3 of them . but it may be some kinda saying or weird belief , but its not a rule
It is usually customary to just have one, for your first born. I have four sons. #1, first shower, #2, no shower, then I had #3&4 when I was almost 40 yrs old, 15 years after last baby. My family had a diaper shower, everyone brought me diapers. That was great, especially when it was twins.
absolutely not!!! a woman may have as many baby showers as she wants, as long as she is pregnant that is. sometimes many women only get the first shower with the first baby because some people tend to forget about seasoned moms and just assume that they have everything they need already, but that’s just not the case.
It use to be! My grandmothers believe that. Because even if they had a boy and a girl they would wear the same clothes, sleep in the same crib, but times have changed!! I’ve had one but when i get pregnant again I’m definatley going to have another baby shower especially if it’s a different sex!!
Most women only have one for the first child. After that people assume you have most of what you need and your close friends give you gifts still. It’s pretty unusual to have a shower for every child.
no you can have one for each new baby no rule says you can’t
wow, i’m shocked over how many people have NOT heard that it is ettiquette to only have a baby shower for your first child. Personally, i think that’s a load of crap and every expecting mommy and new baby deserve to have a party. my inlaws do not have more than the one shower and none of them came to my 2nd child’s shower, only my husband’s parents came to the hospital (with no gifts), and only one of my sister in laws got child #2 a gift a month after we were home(her husband had just passed away so there’s absolutely no hard feelings towards her in this). also none of my inlaws came to that baby’s first birthday.
There is no rule for that other then if you are having another baby shower… be kind enough to buy the other 2 kids a gift too… (so they don’t feel left out.)
No, I am having my 2nd baby shower next weekend. I don’t find the problem with having more than 1.
I think its perfectly fine to have more then one baby shower. Baby showers are special because it is about celebrating the baby. However, if your going on your 4th or 5th kid, I think you can call it quits. Unless…….you have all boys and your getting your first girl, you need all new stuff!!
no you can have one with each child.
because a baby shower is to shower the new baby with gifts to get the mom and baby started
