The way I see it, the more prepared you can be, the better. Some people think it’s bad luck to buy clothes for the baby before it’s born because you’ll jinx the pregnancy. When I found out I was pregnant I started browsing around for cribs, reading reviews on baby products, and started up an Amazon gift registry so I could use it like a shopping checklist for myself. I’ve spent lots of time researching safety standards, recalled items, and reading reviews. If you’re a big planner (like me) it takes LOTS of time to prepare!
As soon as we found out the sex we went straight to the store to buy a cute little girl outfit and went over paint samples we had already brought home months before for nursery colors. I wanted to get the nursery set up before I was too tired/huge to be able to help and I’m glad I did! Now at 30 weeks my back hurts, and I’ve managed to be sick for the past 3 weekends in a row. I haven’t been able to do much more than organize her closet! My husband and I decided to buy the big ticket items we didn’t feel comfortable putting on a registry (breast pump, crib, changing table, jogging stroller, etc) and the things we didn’t think would be "fun" for people to buy for a baby shower (crib mattress, changing pad, diaper pail, etc).
If you’re excited to buy some clothes for your little one then go for it! Babies go through TONS of clothes, so even if you buy several outfits he’ll still need more. Plus, it’s so fun to be able to finally browse the baby section for your OWN baby! Congratulations on your little one, and happy shopping!
If you know the sex yes it’s fine
better to start when you find out the sex, if you wait until just a couple weeks before then it could be too late. some women go into labor at 37 weeks safely, once you are full term they will not stop your labor.
When we found out the gender, I splurged at baby gap and got him a few outfits. I waited until after the baby shower to buy anything else though
Buy a little at a time. I would start now. I started as soon as i found out what i was having.
i went on a big baby shopping spree at exactly 21 weeks. but i bought some clothes immediately following my sono when i found out i was having a girl….. if you are having a baby shower you should wait til after but it is so hard to fight the urge to shop for little one.
i say go for it!!! im surprised you waited this long… Im only 10 weeks and i have family that has bought some cloths already and im always looking at things to buy… GO FOR IT!!!!
I think what you are feeling in natural. I know I did. I went out and bought stuff for my baby girl right away. I know that really it would be best to wait till like 30 weeks but I don’t know anyone with that will power….!!!!
Congrats on your impending baby Boy.
My baby is Due July 20. All my nursery furniture has been bought. All my big things such as car seats, swing, bouncer, ETC all bought. I have bought some unisex onsies and bath towels. On Wed I have my 20 week ultrasound. Hopefully I will be able to find out the sex and I will be clothes shopping that day.
Here are my reasons why:
1. Because I really can’t wait.
2. Because God knows how I am going to feel when I am 8-9 months pregnant. My last son I got so huge that by 7.5 months I had strangers asking me if I was having triplets. Going to work and church was about all I had the energy to do. So if I wait that long my baby might be naked.
3. Our babies are due in July the summer. Those clothes are coming out now. By June you will be getting the picked over leftovers and fall clothes will be mostly what the stores will carry. Newborn and the smaller sizes seems to go the quickest so waiting too long could make it harder to find what you like.
I think it’s ok, i personally didn’t i found out i was having a girl at 22 weeks, now i’m 30 weeks and only in the last week have i begun buying clothes etc. I wont even buy my pram untill after i give birth.
yes you wont hurt anything whether you know the sex or not because green and yellow are neutral
It’s fine to buy clothes. But remember, if you have a baby shower, most people are going to buy you clothes. When I bought them I went for 3-6 months and even some 9 month outfits. Just remember what the weather might be like when they fit into it.
i say shop away. if you know the gender. it’s more like why not? and you get to walk around for a bit. congradulations by the way.
i started buying things for my baby once i was past the 13 week stage and had my first scan then when i had my second scan and was told it was a boy that was when i started buying blue stuff and did his nursery for him. i think its best that your well prepared because when you get closer to the birth you will probably be more tired and wont want to do as much
I think you are right. Buy as much as you can so when the Baby arrives you have everything ready. And also you have TIME to buy it all. If you do it a few weeks before your due date then your going to be rushing everywhere and by that time you’ll get very tired easy. So, buy a few things here and there. Especially Major Purchases.
yes it’s fine! i started buying baby clothes when i found out i had a little man at 16 weeks. If you buy just a little along the away is better than rushing out all at once and buying clothes.
Why wait to buy baby stuff the sooner you get the baby clothes you will be needing the less you have to worry about now. you should be able to relax and rest before your due date and not have to rush to get baby clothes. When I was pregnant I would get clothes throughout my pregnancy as I saw them and thought they were cute. It also gives you time to wash all the clothes 1st that you buy and to put them away and have them organized. Congrats on your pregnancy!
Also a good place to get baby stuff thats like new is at a store called once upon a child. you can look up store locations at this weblink:

I think you should start now. If you are excited then go for it, it is so much fun. Plus there is so much to do before baby arrives that is will be nice to get some of it done now. You have more energy now in your second trimester so go shopping. Congrats on your baby boy!!
yes! I’m 21 weeks and as soon as I found out at 18 weeks I went out and bought her a little dress
like you said though I’ve only bought a few outfits and don’t plan on buying much more until after the baby shower. good luck and have fun shopping!
Get small stuff here and there. Baby stuff is expensive and since you know the sex it is better to spread it out then to get stuck with an empty wallet.
I am 37 weeks and will set up the nursery next weekend but I already have everything I think I will need. Started shopping at 22 weeks.
sure you go right ahead! there is nothing wrong with that at all!!!!
congrats!
In the last couple of weeks of your pregnancy, your body will be too tired and you’ll be aching too much and to go shopping anywhere.
It’s your baby so don’t really listen to what your mother says. If you want to buy clothes now, you go for it! In the end you are having a baby and it’s better to be more organized than less prepared. Babies can come earlier than the due date, so it’s always good to have a back up of things in case that happens.
I still haven’t got my nursery things and i’m regretting that I didn’t get this earlier, cos as my body aches and i’m tired now. I don’t even have a house yet to put this stuff in, so I have to wait until I can get a house before buying the big things.
But if you already have a house and some money, then nothing is stopping you from being prepared.
Good luck
Ummm, this is the best time to do everything you can because by the time you get to 37 weeks you won’t even want to do anything. You’re just gonna be wanting the baby out. Plus, who said you’ll make it alll the way to your due date anyway? Anything can happen with pregnancy.
hey hunni
with my son (who’s now 19 months) i had the pram and lots of clothes bought when i turned 20 weeks lol i was so excited i couldn’t help myself, from week 9 i bought a blue coat…yes blue i wanted a boy badly lol and i got my boy. every time i was out i would buy something, by 36 weeks everything was bought and his bedroom was finished
with my daughter (who’s 11 weeks now) we bought a little pink dress after my 11 week scan because we badly wanted a girl this time..thank god we got what we wanted. this time we never started getting things until after 24 weeks. she was born 4 weeks early so we never has a few things in so hubby had to run out and buy them but her bedroom is still not finished hoping by the end of the month it will be done. we got the double buggy in by 28 weeks. i guess i was more relaxed with that pregnancy and didn’t rush getting things in and done.
its up to you, congrats and best of luck
I wouldn’t buy too many things, unless you know you won’t have a lot of people buying baby clothes for you, or buy some of the bigger sizes, since most people buy the little baby clothes. with both my boys, I wanted to buy some clothes early one, but we didn’t get any clothes for the first until after he was born (well, he did come 5 weeks early, so he did catch us a little unaware), and for the second one, we are reusing a lot of big brother’s clothes (but a coworker of my husband’s gave us a ton of baby clothes as well). I did have clothes out and washed and ready for the little one though, but only at around 30 weeks or so.
I started buying clothes at 13 weeks. It was unisex but I wanted to get mine done sooner then later. I had to be put on bed rest at 20 weeks up until 42 weeks because I was really sick. So, you get it done now. Because you never know what the future will hold. Pregnancy is hard and even if nothing happens, you are going to be sleepy and worn out. Get it done now so you can just look at it and be happy.^^
I’d caution you not to buy too many first month clothes – you never know what size baby you will have. my friend had all these cute 1-3 month outfits and her baby came out huge – only wore a few outfits before they were moving up into the next size. So, don’t wash/take off tags! That would be my best advice!!
i didnt even know the sex and i started buy baby stuff including clothes … i started at like 15 weeks though … lol … she’s my first …
Go for it. My mom started baby shopping for my baby before i even went to see the OB doctor. If you dont know the sex im sure you already know to just buy gender neutral things and then start buying pink or blue when you find out what you are having. Good luck.
I started buying clothes right as soon as I found out I was expecting (just gender neutral sleepers and such). That said, I am one for deals so I bought from garage sales – 10cents per sleeper, how could I go wrong. At about 20 weeks I bought a large tupperware full of used clothes from off kijiji (I knew I was having a boy by that point). Since then I haven`t had to buy anymore since I think I have everything I need LOL.
If you want to buy now, do it! It`s your baby, you`re the mom and do what you feel is right!!!
I think it’s a great idea to be prepared
I am 19 weeks and as soon as I find out if Im having a boy or a girl I AM GOING SHOPPING!
A couple weeks before? oh my. Did you know, depending on where you get some stuff, things like cribs, strollers, change tables can take up to 6 weeks to arrive (because stores rarely hold them in stock so they have to be ordered).
Start buying now hun!! 20 weeks is a good time to start things. We moved when I was 28 weeks so I didn’t want to buy too much before hand) but now I’m wishing I had bought it anyways. I’m 32 weeks and feel like there just isn’t enough time left. So do start now, it’ll save you stress down the line.
