How many packages of diapers should I get to start off with?

I want to stock up a little bit on Pampers, and I was wondering how many packs of newborn and stage 1 diapers I should get. I don’t know how long a baby stays in newborn and size 1 diapers. I will be breastfeeding so that means more changes anyhow. Experiences? Opinions? Ideas?

I wouldn’t stock up on too many newborn diapers, just in case you have a large baby. My son was almost 9 lbs at birth, and he could fit into size 1 right away. Also remember that you get newborn diapers at the hospital as well (my hospital had Pampers Swaddlers), and those lasted me at least a week. If you have a smaller baby, you can always send a family member out to get more newborn diapers, but I would only stock up on size 1. I would suggest, however, that you don’t stock up too many in one brand, because it might not work for you. Babies are all shaped differently and have different skin sensitivities. Some diaper brands cause a rash on one baby and not on another. Some leak on one body type and not on another. If you only buy Pampers and they don’t work, then you have to go through the trouble of returning them and buying something else.
One tip: Walmart takes back anything they sell, even if you don’t have a receipt, so you can always return diapers there.

It all depends on birth weight. A baby between 7-9 lbs should go through about 200 newborn size and then about 300 size 1… just keep your receipts and exchange unopened packages for a different size if you need.
Watch what you buy. Your baby’s butt maybe smaller then what you think it will be. I had a friend who bought a ton of stage 1 diapers, but when her baby was born the babies butt was to small for the diapers. So she had to go find a smaller size last minute. So. Whatever you do, don’t assume.
Just get two packs of newborns, don’t bother with size 1′s until you need them, that will get you out of the house to shop!! Believe me, you will be better off with this approach.
I would get 2 or 3 packages of the Newborn, but don’t open them until you need them. Babies can grow at different rates. It’s really hard to say.

do not buy more than 1 bag.. trust me.. I had my son, the doctors told me before I delivered, oh he will be small don’t worry..
10 lbs 22 inches long.. i used ONE newborn diaper.. I opened 3 packs of the things and put them in the holder.
Buy 1 pack and then work from there.. or find a idiot like me for a friend and take her extras…
i would suggest one box of size ones. get the big box from somewhere like sams or costcos. this should be all you need b/f size 2. don’t even bother w/ newborn. stage 1 will be just fine. good luck w/ your baby!!!

I would get two packs of Newborn and two packs of size 1. You don’t want to have too many Newborn diapers because they outgrow them quickly, especially if your baby is large at birth. You can always go buy more newborn size diapers if they still fit. At the hospital I delivered at they didn’t even have Newborn size diapers – they just had size 1. They fit ok. You just put the tabs closer together in the front and fold the top over further. You’ll already be folding them over to keep them away from the belly button anyway, so it’s really not a hassle. Don’t believe those diapers with the cutout for the belly button. The cutout ends up too high on the baby’s abdomen, so you’ll end up folding them over anyway.
For breastfeeding, the Pampers Swaddlers are best. They have the "absorb away" liner that soaks up the runny breastmilk poo quickly. This leads to a decreased chance of messy leaks.
I would get about two of the biggest packages. If you have a wholesale store near you like BJ’s, Costco, or Sam’s Club, you would probably get the best deal their if you buy in bulk.
They do grow fast, but it depends on how big your baby is at birth. Mine was 6 pounds 11 ounces and is probably in a size 1 diaper now at 6 weeks. I use only cloth diapers with her, but she was outgrowing her newborn fitted cloth diapers by 3 weeks. The size of those is similar to the newborn Pampers. My nephew was 9 pounds at birth, so he was in a size 1 by 2 weeks and is already in a size 3. The cloth diapers we are using now will last her another couple of months at least. I love not having to buy more diapers and washing them only takes me 5 minutes three times a week.
You may end up switching to stage 1 before finishing a pack of the newborns depending on the baby’s size. I’d get 2 packs of the stage 1 just to have something and see if you need the newborn once baby’s here.
Hi sweetie, just start off with a box at a time and see how you go. Some babies are way bigger than expected when born and others may be born early or on time but just small so it really is all just a guessing game. I use the huggies brand here in Australia, they are a good brand and newborn boxes are 108 nappies. I often wait till the specials are on and pick up a box for $29.99. My youngest is in crawler nappies at the moment and I often pick up a couple of boxes at a time as they slow their growth around that age but newborns can grow fast so unless you plan on having more kids, whatever you don’t use, you can save for the next baby as I did. Nappies do not expire, some can be faulty but otherwise they don’t expire and can be used at a later date. All the best for a safe arrival when your baby comes. xx
You can also probably get some of the newborn diapers at the hospital. They’ll have packs in the room — make sure to take them home. I’d say have two cases of newborn diapers ready in advance. I think they are good for babies up to 12 pounds (it says so on the box). You’ll probably be at the doctor pretty frequently to check the baby’s weight (that’s not a bad thing, don’t worry), so you’ll know how close he/she is to growing out of them.
